If You Love Someone, Set Them Free

by The Artist ONE

I’ve always found the phrase “If you love someone, set them free” to be one of those clichés people toss around without much thought. But if you dig deeper, there’s a powerful truth beneath the surface—one that speaks not just about love, but about identity, solitude, and the voice of God.

When you set someone free, you’re left with something most people avoid at all costs: being alone. And alone is the key.

Most people are never truly alone. Sure, they might not be in a romantic relationship, but they’re constantly surrounded—by friends, events, noise, social media, distractions. You rarely see them sit in stillness, away from everything. That’s because solitude demands something terrifying: self-confrontation.

To be alone means to see yourself as you truly are—without filters, without validation, without the masks we wear to be liked or accepted. And from that place of stillness, something extraordinary can happen: you meet yourself. And, if your heart is open, you meet God.

Three Questions from a Stranger

Someone messaged me randomly on X (formerly Twitter), asking three questions. The first was about finding love. My answer was simple:

“Learn to let go.”

You can’t find love until you let go of what hurt you. You can’t receive someone new until you release the ghosts of the past. Most people run back into relationships not because they’re ready, but because they’re afraid of being alone. But if you never face that solitude, you’ll never grow. You’ll fall into the same traps, chasing familiar patterns instead of real connection.

The second question was about financial freedom. Again, my answer didn’t change:

“Learn to let go.”

So many people destroy their own lives trying to chase what others have—the new car, the latest iPhone, the vacation, the college degree that was more about fitting in than finding purpose. They become slaves to an image. But real freedom starts when you let go of the need to be someone else and instead focus on becoming the person God designed you to be.

You can’t chase purpose until you clear the noise.

You can’t hear God while you’re listening to the world.

You have to get alone.

The Power of Letting Go

I never got the third question, but honestly? My answer would have been the same.

“Learn to let go.”

Once you do that, once you let go of the need to be seen, the desire to be understood, the pressure to perform—you become free. And when you’re free, you find something most people never do: a sound mind, a steady spirit, and the power of divine manifestation.

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”
— Isaiah 26:3 (KJV)

When you know who you are—when you’ve spent time alone, in prayer, in quiet, in honesty—there is nothing you cannot do. Because now your desires align with your design. And your design comes from your Creator.

“Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”
— Psalm 37:4 (KJV)

And here’s the most beautiful truth I’ve found in my walk:

When you finally let go, you’ll find God was waiting.
Not to shame you, not to scold you—but to help you design your life. To show you His plan. To walk with you in purpose.

“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.”
— James 4:8 (KJV)

Final Thought

If you love someone—set them free.
If you want to find yourself—set yourself free.
If you want peace—step into the silence.
Let go.
Be alone.
And in that stillness, watch the voice of God rise above the noise.

You are not alone.
You are just beginning.
